Win the Head Lice Battle: without toxic chemicals

Head lice (Pediculus humanus, var. capitis) are nasty, itchy, contagious parasites. Some products used to get rid of lice are even worse. Some reported reactions to common lice treatments include seizures, cancer, behavioral changes, attention deficit disorders, chronic skin eruptions, neuromuscular complaints, and death.

Over 65% of reported serious reactions to lice treatments (pediculocides) involved the dangerous pesticide lindane (brand name Kwell) which is in the same family of products as D.D.T. Synergized pyrethrin products (brand names - Clear lice, RID, Pronto) and permethrin (Nix) were responsible for most of the remaining incidents.

Unfortunately, these treatments are not only toxic and potentially hazardous, but the failure rate is increasing at an alarming rate. It seems as though lice may be building a resistance to synergized pyrethrin and permethrin products.

The vast majority of lice infestations affect our most vulnerable and susceptible population, children. Parents are constantly in search of preventative and curative solutions for lice.

Reduce the Risk

The National Pediculosis Association and other lice experts include these steps for reducing the risk of lice infestation:

Do not share items that come in contact with hair or the head. Lice don't jump and they can't fly. Lice spread via direct contact, either head to head or though shared items.

Watch for signs of head lice, such as frequent head scratching. Remember that anyone can get lice so be constantly vigilant.

Check all family members for lice and nits (lice eggs) weekly. Only those who are infected should be treated.

Ensure not to confuse nits with hair debris (dandruff, hair clumps, or dirt). Lice treatment is not appropriate for hair debris.

Safe Remedy to the Rescue

Primarily due to the inherent health risks associated with pharmaceutical lice treatments, and their growing ineffectiveness against nits and lice, most experts recommend manually removing lice and nits as a necessary part of any effective head lice treatment. Once you confirm your child is infested:

Notify your child's school, camp, child care provider, and neighborhood parents that there has been a lice infestation and they should be on the lookout for more cases.

Purchase a high quality, sturdy comb specifically designed for removal of lice and nits.

Thoroughly wash hair and scalp using a tablespoon of shampoo enhanced with 30 drops of Super Strength Oil of Oregano.

Remove all nits! Separate hair in sections and remove all attached nits using your lice and nit comb, baby safety scissors and fingernails as required.

Wash bedding and recently worn (potentially infested) clothing, cloth hair accessories (elastics, scrunches etc.) in hot water enhanced with 60 drops of Super Strength Oil of Oregano then dry in a hot dryer.

Soak combs and hair brushes in hot (not boiling) water enhanced with 10 drops of Super Strength Oil of Oregano

Open Super Strength Oil of Oregano capsules, combine with Extra Strength Tea Tree Body Powder and sprinkle combination onto rugs, upholstered furniture, stuffed animals, and car seats. Let sit for 15 minutes, then vacuum to remove lice or fallen hairs with attached nits.

Repeat the steps outlined in this list until all nits and lice are removed.

While many have found Tea Tree Oil works almost as well as Oil of Oregano, utilizing a blend of these two proven parasite eradicators provides a potent natural treatment sure to provide relief. This oil blend can also be applied to the scalp, covered with a shower cap, and remain on for a few hours or overnight. Ensure you shield the eyes during application as both oils may sting.

As a precautionary measure, adding a blend of these oils to shampoos and soaps used for regular hygiene can assist to keep your loved ones free from infestation.
