A Cure For the Common Cold?

Health 4 All, September, 2000 by Joel Thuna

Is there a cure for the common cold? The answer is a resounding YES! It's a healthy immune system. Most natural approaches rely on boosting immune system response. Echinacea, Goldenseal and Oregano are leading non-drug remedies for colds and provide significant relief for most people. Do natural remedies really work? According to more and more experts, the answer is "Yes."

The common cold is a viral infection, that can be caused by over 200 different viruses which produce a general inflammation of mucus membranes in the respiratory passages. It is running rampant in our modern society. According to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID) the common cold infects Americans 1 Billion times a year. Adults average 3 - 5.6 colds per year while children can have as many as 8.3 colds each year. The cost to our health and economy is tremendous. It is the leading cause of doctor visits and absenteeism.

The key to preventing and treating the common cold is to boost and support your immune system. By helping your body fight colds, you will be healthier without the side effects associated with pharmaceutical OTC cold products.

Antibiotics & Herbs

We have all grown up in the era of "Modern Medicine" where a pill is created to cure everything. With colds, many patients and physicians believe the answer lies in antibiotics. Unfortunately, as viruses cause almost all sore throats and colds, antibiotics are useless. In fact, pharmaceutical antibiotics have a serious side effect. Their overuse has created drug resistant bacteria, which we are unable to kill.

Botanical medicines may be the pill modern medicine is looking for. Working in a number of powerful ways, they: stimulate the body's own natural defenses, make it more difficult for an infection to take hold and stay in place, and have powerful anti-viral and antibacterial activities without destroying our friendly intestinal bacteria. In cases where an antibiotic is necessary, many herbs enhance the antibacterial effect.

Echinacea

Echinacea is widely regarded as "the immune herb". Clinical studies now demonstrate that the most potent of the echinaceas, Echinacea angustifolia root, effectively combats symptoms of colds, flu, and other respiratory infections. Research has proven its active constituents have a profoundly beneficial action on the immune system. This is why echinacea is used to restore normal immune function in chemotherapy patients.

Echinacea works with the body to combat and ultimately defeat various bacterial, fungal, viral and protozoan infections. Symptoms normally associated with these types of infections are decreased in duration and severity with use of echinacea.

Goldenseal

This broadleaf herb has risen to a respected position with practitioners above most herbs. The U.S.A. Pharmacopoeia listed it due to its medical importance. Goldenseal use has transcended international borders to become a worldwide favourite of herbalists and naturopathic doctors.

People often use goldenseal as a natural antibiotic, infection fighter, immune system enhancer, and general health tonic. However, many feel this unique plant can help with any problem.

Goldenseal effectively reduces swelling and helps in cases of upper respiratory and urinary tract infections. It is commonly recommended for viral conditions like colds, flu, sinus infections, and gastritis.

Oregano

Native to Mediterranean regions, oregano has a highly deserved reputation as a natural remedy. This common culinary spice has been used for centuries to treat respiratory problems such as colds, flu, asthma, bronchitis, and coughs.

A powerful preventative and remedy for the common cold, oregano works to on multiple levels to combat a cold. One of the most potent antiviral agents known to man, oregano can kill most viruses on contact, including those that cause the common cold.

Classified as an immune stimulant, oregano can increase the body's white blood cell function and lymph flow. These build the body's immune defenses, allowing it to better fight bacterial and viral infections.

Oregano acts to reduce the severity and may eliminate the annoying symptoms of colds. These include chills, congestion, coughs, ear aches, fevers, sore throat, muscle aches, and stuffy nose. According to Norman R. Farnsworth, Ph.D., of the University of Illinois at Chicago, thymol (found in oregano) can be used to help loosen phlegm in the lungs.

Ending the Misery

Popular OTC pharmaceutical multi-symptom cold drugs are precisely the wrong way to treat a cold, according to the FDA's Review Council on OTC Cold Products. Why? Cold symptoms don't all appear at the same time. Therefore multi-symptom drugs invariably lead to over medication.

Many experts now believe the best way to "cure" the common cold is through a healthy, properly functioning immune system. By getting plenty of rest and supplementing our diets to support our immune response, we can avoid being miserable during the cold season.
