Breathe Easy: Natural Allergy Relief!

Health 4 All, September, 2000 by Joel Thuna

It is estimated that one fifth of the Western world routinely suffers from allergies. Manifesting themselves in a variety of forms, allergies range in severity from bothersome to life threatening.

An allergy is an abnormal, adverse physical reaction to specific substances called allergens (or antigens). Allergy sufferers react to small quantities of these allergens, which are harmless to others.

No one knows exactly why people develop allergies, but heredity is a strong predictor. When one parent has allergies, their child will develop allergies 75% of the time. When both parents have allergies, the child will also suffer from allergies. The second most common cause of allergies is poor digestion. If a food is not being properly digested it can become an allergen, and eventually begin to trigger reactions.

Toxic overload, drugs, excessive use of steroids or antibiotics, and exposure to toxic chemicals, all can be significant causes of allergies. When we exceed our body's capacity to detoxify itself, toxins are deposited throughout our body. This can cause an extensive range of health problems, including allergies.

When left untreated, the cumulative effect of allergies can weaken the whole body, especially digestion and immunity, increase disease risk, whittle away our vitality and decrease our quality of life.

Coming in many distinct forms, allergies are typically grouped in general categories according to the types of substances causing them or by parts of the body affected.

Skin allergies: A reaction to direct, topical exposure by a specific allergen is also known as contact dermatitis.

Respiratory allergies: Many suffer from hay fever (allergic rhinitis). Typical symptoms include itchy eyes, nose, and roof of mouth or throat, along with nasal congestion, coughing, and sneezing.

Asthma: Although the causes are various, the chief ones include allergies to animal dander, dust mites, mold spores, pollen, and environmental exposure.

Food allergies: An estimated 70% of people with food allergies are under 30; most are children under the age of 6.

When an allergen is introduced it triggers an increase in the antibodies immunoglobulin E (IgE), causing an immune system reaction and inflammation. When IgE encounters an allergen, it activates the release of inflammatory chemicals, such as histamine, from mast cells to destroy or disable the allergen. This attempt to seek-and-destroy the allergen causes the familiar symptoms of sneezing, runny nose, and watery eyes.

Antihistamine (the pharmaceutical answer to allergies) is a misleading name, which directs people to the incorrect belief that they prevent histamine production. These drugs merely suppress the appearance of physical symptoms, doing nothing to treat the underlying cause. Often, these antihistamines produce undesirable side effects, including heart palpitations, lethargy, drowsiness, dizziness, insomnia, and even depression. Regular use of antihistamines may perpetuate your allergies and hinder reeducation of your immune system. The good news is, there exists a better way to treat allergies. There are safe, natural substances which work with your body to reduce your allergies.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is not an antihistamine but can be effective in reducing allergy symptoms, without the drowsiness caused by many antihistamines.

Several studies have shown that high levels of vitamin C help reduce histamine release from mast cells, as well as speeding histamine break down once it is released. Conversely, research shows that vitamin C deficiency can send histamine blood levels 'through the roof' worsening allergies.

Clinical trials indicate that vitamin C may also help dampen some of the inflammation associated with chronic allergies.

Phytosterol Complex

Phytosterols (Phyto = Plant) are plant compounds found to have a wide range of health benefits. They are beneficial in treating and preventing many health conditions and are particularly helpful to treat and prevent allergies.

Clinical studies show that Phytosterols exhibit immune-modulating qualities, which help keep the immune system in balance. Thus, they help to avoid immune system over-response (allergies) and the subsequent cumulative bodily damage caused by repeated allergic reactions.

Phytosterols function to control allergic reactions by causing a decrease in the manufacture of IgE, with a resulting decrease in the bodies response to allergens. In addition, Phytosterols minimize allergic inflammations by reducing the body's production of the substance causing them.

Guaranteed Potency Oregano Oil

Oregano Oil is a powerful tonic and healer providing benefits to the entire body and its systems. In the case of allergies, it works with Beta-Sitosterol to support and strengthen the immune system. Oregano Oil improves digestion and helps the body eradicate invading pathogens, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses, which can both, cause and perpetuate allergic reactions.

The combination of Guaranteed Potency Oregano, Vitamin C and Phytosterol Complex is the ideal allergy preventive. It is non-habit forming, containing no aspirin (ASA), antihistamines, or stimulants. Over time, this combination can tone the immune system to enable a reduction in the frequency and severity of allergies.

Remember most allergic reactions are not serious. However, some (such as anaphylaxis) can result in an inability to breathe or severe drop in blood pressure, and can be fatal. If your allergic reactions are severe, it is vital that you visit a medical doctor for immediate emergency medical treatment.
